Goal Of Life > If we shall be like Him.. how can we possibly not be.. LIKE Him? > If that isn’t what we are to God... then WHY call us sons and daughters at all??
Think about that: Every way.
Why do Christians today try to spiritualize away something that is so easy to understand, and such a tremendous offer?
2 Corinthians 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Your son is made from your own DNA, and your goal – even if it costs your own life to achieve it – is for him to grow up healthy and strong and in every way like you – if not better! And since God built you after His own pattern... how could God be any different??
Most Christians picture themselves one day having a relationship with God not unlike a beloved pet; one who can never understand His master, but loves Him blindly and lives for the tiniest morsel of attention.
...But that’s not the relationship a son has with his father!
If we succeed in finding salvation, our relationship with Him will not be slave-and-master, servant-and-Lord (John 15:15).
Nor will it be like the relationship He has with the angels (Revelation 19:10), whose purpose is to help US find salvation (Hebrews 1:5, 13-14).
Because none of these things call God “Abba”! (Galatians 4:6). None of them were told “he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations” (Revelation 2:26).
But we were! Because we are God’s children, and no one treats their son as a slave; nor do you treat him as a servant; and certainly not as a dog. You treat him as a son, you train him to act like you, and raise him to be an heir to all you have!
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Like Him. In His image, and in His likeness. Glorified together with Jesus; heirs, as Jesus is, of the Father’s throne. Friends of God; sons of God; rulers in the throne of God; how many different ways must the Bible say it?
Hebrews 2:9-11 tells us that Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brethren; not metaphorically, but literally. Why then, are you afraid to call Him yours?
Jesus didn’t think it was robbery to compare Himself to God; why then, since you are made in the same image as He was, do you feel like it is blasphemy?
We are commanded to have this same mind in us; and yet there is scarcely a Christian alive who truly thinks of himself as the offspring of God, with the potential to literally become a God, just like God is a God.
Impossible, you say?
Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
God created mankind for this exact purpose. He told us so, point-blank, a thousand times in the Bible. If it weren’t possible, then God has wasted an awful lot of effort!
God created us because He wanted children; literal, actual children, in every way like Him. And He designed us in His image so that we could understand that.
So that by being fathers and having sons of our own, we could understand what He is trying to do here.
So that by knowing what we want for our children – and what we expect from them – we can understand what He wants for us... and what He expects from us in return.
We were made in the image of God, to look like God, from the very first day (Genesis 1:27). That part was easy – simply looking like God.
But we were not made in God’s likeness because teaching a child to act like you takes time! It takes training, and none of us are finished yet!
2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NKJV Now the Lord is the Spirit; ...But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
We are all born bearing the face of God, but we are meant to spend our lives growing into a copy of the soul of God. So that, one mistake at a time, we can learn to make better and better choices – until our choices would be a copy of His own.
Because humans are not really a separate species from God at all...
